I'm not particularly technical but I've tried to find some more info: I have verified that I have DirectX 12. The Renpy documentation seems to suggest that only DX9 or DX11 is required for model-based rendering. I've tried forcing renpy to use gl2 or angle2 rendering, neither option changed anything. I hope this information is useful.

I too have experienced an error. My laptop isn't new, but the graphics drivers are up to date (less than a month old). I haven't come across a game or vn that I can't run at all, even modern ones. I'll post the error traceback below, I hope it's useful.
